iWeb to WordPress

Wordpress

So, I decided that I would move my blog from iWeb to WordPress.  One of the reasons I decided to do this is it will give me the capability of hosting more blogs and even doing content based blogging.  I also was dumping my iWeb folder onto my Ubuntu box and therefore didn’t have the ability to allow comments on my blog.  I will still keep my personal Web site based on iWeb (at least for now), and will work on integrating them together if at all possible.

I installed WordPress on my Ubuntu Hardy (8.04 LTS) installation.  I initially used the package from the ubuntu repositories (apt-get) but after my initial spin, I decided to go with the most recent tarball from WordPress itself.  Installation was a breeze and consisted of:

  1. unpacking the tarball (tar -xvf filename)
  2. changing the ownership of the wordpress directory to allow the Apache user write privileges (chown -R user:group wordpress)
  3. creating a wordpress user and database in phpMyAdmin
  4. browsing to the wordpress directory

From there it was as simple as walking throught he installation wizard to create the config file, yadda yadda yadda.

Sucking in my entries from iWeb was easy. To get the content I just imported the RSS feed, but I still needed to go back and add in all my images, fix a few broken links, and then tag and categorize all the existing posts.  I found a theme I liked and made a few minor modifications in the .php files to hide a few things.

I’ll play around with the .css files, add some widgets, maybe a few plugins and keep toying with it.  I think one of the harder things will be to somehow integrate from my iWeb Web site into this blog.

A lot of people find this post via googling iWeb and WordPress. To let you know what I did, I created an HTML snippet in iWeb on my blog page and put the following into the snippet:

    HTML Snippet for redirect

When someone hits that page, their browser will automatically send them to that URL. I also put a link on the page for those that have javascript turned off.
