Oh what to do with the random piece of meat in the freezer? My answer…grill it. On the Big Green Egg of course.
So I found a random zip lock bag in the freezer. It had a symbol written on the zip lock that was a circle with the arrow pointing out. You know the one, the global symbol of the male (as opposed to the circle with the cross on the inside which is the symbol of a female).
Upon further consideration, I determined that it must have been given to me by some random person (I know, how bad of me not to remember) and knowing my friends it was most likely vension. The symbol was to indicate that it was a buck.

My wife and I are planning on moving in the next few months. We’ve started to empty out the basement and have successfully gotten rid of stuff (and made money at it too) on eBay and Craig’s List. We also started going through the various book shelves in our house and deciding what to keep (i.e. pay someone to haul across the country) and what not to keep.
I’ve had a crate of used paperback and hardback books in the basement for months. When friends come over, we offer them any book in the crate that they want free of charge just to get it off our hands. We don’t have a local used bookstore so we were going to toss them if we couldn’t pass them on. We are trying to be environmentally friendly and were loathe to put the stuff in the trash so we have identified ways to recycle them (our local recycle pickup will accept paperback books and the local YMCA will take old text books and hardback books). However, even that just seemed wasteful.
I was using the new Safari 4 beta (leo) this morning and using the wp_admin pages of my wordpress blog to edit a new blog post. I have several plug-ins enabled for editing (enhanced tiny mce being the most likely culprit). As I went back to enter a link I got the gray screen of death…(at least in the browser window)…
I took a screenshot and there were the auto saves, so I didn’t lose much text. However, I did have to re-type a paragraph or two.
It’s what you get for using a beta so I’m not really complaining, I’m just warning others.
I can’t take all the credit for this. I can’t even take a small amount of credit for this. All I did was google, google, and more google for a method to get my calendar entries from my company calendar server (running Leopard Server) to my iPhone. Most of the solutions I came across involved some sort of sync between two calendars (local and remote) using paid for software (which may provide more functionality (like reverse sync)) or using paid software to sync your calendars to Google Calendar and use that as your iPhone calendar.
What I really wanted was alerts. I can’t tell you how many times I missed a conference call or was late to a meeting that was on my company calendar that wasn’t on my iPhone. I just wanted it to ping me 5-15 mintues before a meeting, is this too much to ask for?
Facebook, the social network of social networks, recently changed it’s data retention policies by changing it’s terms of service. They basically have modified the data retention policy for deleted accounts.
I love Facebook. It’s a great way for me to keep in touch with friends and for me to let them know what I’m up to and vice versa. In fact, it’s let me get in touch with friends from Elementary and High School which I haven’t even thought of for decades. However, their privacy policy has left much to be desired. I am not a privacy nut. I have a blog, twitter account, personal web pages, use Google and Amazon (another topic all together). However, the type of data that Facebook is collecting is a bit scary, even for me.
It’s still in beta (as most Google applications are) but now Google has an application that will sycn your iPhone. This concept strikes me as strange, but I guess with this you could ditch iTunes and use something like Songbird and Google to sync everything on your iPhone.
It uses a licenseable Microsoft protocol for the synchronization. Why didn’t Google just write their own? I mean how can they crush Microsoft if they are using their product?
Upon further examination, I think (at least for now) you will still need iTunes. I haven’t tried the Google sync and don’t know that I will. I currently use the Mobile Me sync to keep everything up to date real-time.
Anyone try this yet? If so, what’s the scoop?
I poked around on the WordPress themes site for a while and ended up choosing iNove which was on the first page (due to it’s popularity). I’m continually impressed by WordPress 2.7. The administration pages are dynamic yet simple and the capabilities of installing plugins/widgets remotely is very slick. It’s nice to be able to install a widget, test it with a blog or page post, and then just nix it if you aren’t pleased. It’s so easy and fast that I keep finding widgets I want to install just to mess with them and doing so.
Now if themes were that easy…
To install the theme you simply move the theme zip file into your $WPHOME/themes directory and unzip it (may need to change permissions depending on your setup). All that’s left is to select the theme using the administration pages.
I liked the new theme, as I was getting tired of the orange on black thin column page, so I made a few changes to the widgets that were visible in my sidebar and let it rip.
I do a lot of dog-and-pony public speaking on broadband. I often get asked many questions or statements like:
- My cable modem works fine, why would anyone need more speed?
- What does fiber get me that DSL or Cable HSD does not?
- Just how fast is fiber?
- What can I do with fiber that I can’t do with my current broadband?
- 640K of memory should be enough for anybody.
- Should I have more fiber in my diet?
In addition to discussions around the economic development benefits of broadband, I am often looking for methods to demonstrate the difference between different technologies. I came across a Windows application from some site in the Netherlands (it had a .nl extension) that is sort of what I’m looking for (you can dig around on the Dutch language site and eventually find an English application).
I was messing around in WordPress and adding widgets this week. Adding widgets with WordPress 2.7 is a breeze and I can do it remotely using the wp-admin features. I didn’t noticed that widgets could be installed remotely from the admin tools and was adding them manually. Once I learned that I can install them directly from the admin pages, I added a more.
I added a SEO widget even though it’s probably useless for this blog. It was fun to add and I’ll see if it makes a difference.
I added WordPress Popular Posts which is why on the index (or main) page you see the posts that are visited most often.
I was walking down College Street in Blacksburg recently and noticed that Slumdog Millionaire was playing at the Lyric Theater. I had never been to the Lyric and I have been wanting to see Slumdog for a while so I knocked out both birds with a single stone.
Last night, Stacie and I went to see the movie and thoroughly enjoyed it. Stacie didn’t have any idea what the movie was about and was afraid that I was taking her to see a political movie based on the name and the fact that she had never heard of it before. I also am guilty of taking her to political movies in the past.
As I said, I had not been to the Lyric before and was very surprised when we walked around the corner to see how long the line was. I was afraid we were going to have to go the the big theater, but we made it in just before they quit selling tickets to the early show. While in that long line Stacie saw the poster (my thumbnail) and thought that was a wierd poster for a left wing political movie.
